A new milestone in the world of landscape education as Newcastle University joins an expanding roster of universities offering Landscape Architecture as a Master of Arts (MA).

The launch of Newcastle University’s Master of Arts in Landscape Architecture (MA) marks an exciting new chapter for the institution and the field of landscape architecture. With full accreditation from the Landscape Institute, the programme ensures that graduates are well-prepared to address contemporary challenges in landscape architecture, equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to the field. The MA officially launched this month, with its website now live and applications open for prospective students. This exciting new programme offers a unique opportunity for those looking to enter the dynamic field of landscape architecture, providing a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to the discipline.

The MA is an innovative, studio-based programme designed for cognate graduates and those who have an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture (or overseas equivalent) aspiring to pursue careers in landscape architecture. The curriculum emphasises principles that position landscape architecture as a conduit for planetary health, well-being, and social and ecological justice. Students engage in experimental studios covering topics such as multispecies design and interagency, supported by theoretical modules and fieldwork aimed at preparing the next generation of landscape architects.

Achieving LI accreditation brings substantial benefits to both the programme and its students. For the programme, accreditation serves as a hallmark of excellence, ensuring that the curriculum meets the rigorous standards set by the professional body. This endorsement enhances the programme’s reputation, attracting prospective students and faculty who seek a validated and esteemed educational experience. It fosters stronger connections with the professional community, facilitating collaborations, guest lectures, and industry insights that enrich the learning environment.

For students, studying on an LI-accredited programme offers a clear pathway to professional recognition. Graduates are assured that their education aligns with the competencies required in the landscape architecture profession, providing a solid foundation for their careers. Additionally, students benefit from complimentary LI student membership during their studies, granting access to valuable resources, networking opportunities, and industry events. Upon graduation, they become automatically eligible for Associate membership, marking the step towards achieving Chartered status, a credential that can significantly enhance career prospects and professional development.
