As March comes to a close, the government makes a housing announcement update.

The Landscape Institute welcomes the government’s £2 billion investment in social and affordable housing as a positive step towards addressing the UK’s housing crisis. Delivering housing isn’t just about numbers – it’s about creating high quality, inclusive neighbourhoods that benefit people, place and nature.

Investment must go beyond bricks and mortar to ensure developments promote landscape solutions to health, wellbeing, nature recovery and climate resilience. Landscape professionals are ideally placed to assist in the planning, design and delivery of new social housing schemes across the country.

Belinda Gordon, Director of Policy & Public Affairs, Landscape Institute, said:

“We urge policymakers to prioritise placemaking and integrate high-quality landscapes into all social and affordable housing schemes. This is a vital opportunity to improve access to green space and support health and wellbeing for communities in need and must be seized upon by both national and local government.”
